The Ninth Hour
The Ninth Hour is a study of sacrifice, suffering, and faith, inspired by a scene I encountered at Mount St. Joseph Cemetery in Price Hill, Ohio. The cemetery setting and its sculptural depiction of the Crucifixion became the foundation for this work.
Through dramatic light, deep shadow, and careful detail, the piece focuses not only on the figure of Christ, but on the emotion surrounding the moment—the grief of those below, the weight of sacrifice, and the stillness that follows profound loss.
Created as an original digital artwork and hand-drawn in Procreate by Cincinnati artist Matt Mouser, The Ninth Hour reflects on mortality, devotion, and the enduring hope found beyond suffering.
